The Sad Lament of Pecos Bill on the Eve of Killing His Wife

Sam Shepherd's cowboy operetta The Sad Lament of Pecos Bill conjures the cow-punchin' Texan superhero and his bride Slue-Foot Sue to the stage.

Sue's misadventure with Bill's bronco Widowmaker has forced Pecos to shoot her dead. Now post-mortem, the couple's Tex-Mex lamentations mark their fading memory as much as the extinction of the wild west. Wrangled into shape by a diverse ensemble of actors, musicians and artists, Pecos Bill is like a faded movie poster come to hallucinatory life.

This new production of Pecos Bill boasts evocative new musical arrangements and improvisations; an off-center fusion of a honky-tonk fever dream and wistful western ballad ending up in unexpected new places. Wagon wheels and bones for percussion instruments, Flamenco and psychedelic guitar sounds, and the moan and wheeze of an accordion all combine to make an out of the ordinary Western soundscape.
